On September 17, 2008, Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks at the Great Hall of the People with Jordanian King Abdullah II Bin Al-Hussein, who is on a visit to China and to attend the Beijing 2008 Paralympics closing ceremony.

Hu welcomed Abdullah II to the closing ceremony of the Beijing Paralympics and extended gratitude to the support given by the Jordanian government and people to the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics. He also thanked the Jordanian side for its support and assistance to the Chinese people after a devastating earthquake hit China’s Sichuan province in May.

Hailing the new progress of China-Jordan cooperation in all fields, President Hu said China highly values its cooperation with Jordan in politics, economy and other areas and hopes to explore new channels of cooperation to enrich the collaboration. Hu put forward proposals in the following three aspects to further promote bilateral ties. First, improve the overall coordination of bilateral ties. Hu said leaders of both countries shall maintain communication on important issues in the bilateral relations, continue to improve bilateral strategic dialogue mechanism and advance exchanges and cooperation on politics, economy, trade, science and technology. Second, take care of each other's core interests and critical concerns. China appreciates Jordan's long-time adherence to the one-China policy, and will continue to support Jordan's efforts to safeguard national stability, promote economic and social progress and seek a bigger role in regional and international affairs, Hu said. Third, actively push for practical cooperation in areas like resources development. Both sides should advance economic and trade relations in an all-round and in-depth manner, said Hu.

The Jordanian king told Hu that the Chinese government and people have impressed the world with their successful hosting of the two Games. Jordan will steadfastly follow the one-China policy, and be firmly committed to the development of a strategic cooperative relationship with China, said the king. The two countries shall strengthen their exchanges and cooperation in such fields as resources development, infrastructure construction, trade, science and technology, culture, and human resources development, he noted. China is playing an important role in the Middle East and Africa, he said, adding that Jordan welcomes and supports China to continue to play a constructive role in the region.

Following their talks, the two leaders attended the signing ceremony of documents concerning bilateral cooperation on economic, agricultural technologies and resources development.

Ling Jihua, Wang Huning and Dai Bingguo attended the meeting.
