Liu Zhenmin: I Hope that All Parties Could Make Concerted Efforts to Ease the Situation on the Korean Peninsula

On February 21, 2014, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin and ROK Deputy Minister for Political Affairs Lee Kyung-Soo held diplomatic consultations in Seoul, the Republic of Korea (ROK). The two sides exchanged views on China-ROK relations, the situation on the Korean Peninsula and other issues of mutual interest.

Both sides agreed that since last year, China-ROK strategic cooperative partnership has achieved positive results. Both sides agreed to keep working together in the new year to strengthen strategic communication and coordination and deepen pragmatic cooperation. Both sides agreed to actively promote the FTA negotiations, improve the work of China-ROK Joint Committee on People-to-People Exchanges and drive bilateral relations to achieve new and greater development.

Liu Zhenmin introduced his visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and spoke positively of the easing of the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the north-south relations this year. He further noted that the situation in Northeast Asia is very complicated and there are still uncertainties concerning the situation on the Korean Peninsula. He also expressed the hope that all parties could make concerted efforts to ease the situation and make sure to avoid tensions that arose in the past.

Liu Zhenmin said that China adheres to a nuclear-free peninsula, adheres to maintaining peace and stability on the peninsula, and adheres to solving problems through dialogue and negotiation. China appreciates ROK's efforts to improve north-south relations and supports the two sides to continue dialogue and cooperation. He also hoped that the relevant parties could make joint efforts to create conditions for the resumption of the six-party talks.

ROK thanked China for its efforts to maintain peace and stability on the peninsula and promote the restart of the six-party talks. ROK expressed its willingness to keep maintaining close communication and coordination with China so as to contribute to easing the situation on the peninsula and promote the denuclearization process on the Peninsula.

Liu Zhenmin arrived in Seoul, ROK on the 20th after concluding his visit to DPRK. On the 21st, Liu Zhenming would meet with Kihl-Jae Ryoo, ROK's Minister of Unification and Ju Chul-ki, the president's chief secretary for foreign affairs and security.
