On June 30, 2008, Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo met with visiting Cyprus Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou in Zhongnanhai. Dai made positive comments on the development of China-Cyprus relations and appreciated the Cyprus government's positive attitude in attaching importance to developing ties with China and its sympathy and assistance to China following the Sichuan earthquake. Dai said the Chinese government gives top priority to its friendly cooperative relations with Cyprus, and is ready to work with Cyprus to further tap potential of economic and trade cooperation, expand the area of pragmatic cooperation, keep closer humanities exchanges and open up a new prospect for bilateral ties, so as to push for sound, stable development of China-EU ties. Kyprianou once again expressed condolences to China over the Wenchuan earthquake. Hailing the sound development of Cyprus-China relations, he expressed hope that the two countries will continue to expand cooperation in economy, trade and other areas. The Cyprus side thanked for China's efforts in actively pushing for the resolution of the Cyprus issue within the framework of the United Nations, expressing willingness to continue its active and constructive role in the EU and promote the smooth development of EU-China ties. |
