On July 2, 2008, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held talks with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. The United Nations is an important mechanism for the international community to enhance cooperation, tackle challenges and practice multilateralism, Yang told Ban. "The role of the United Nations is irreplaceable, "Yang said. He said China supports the UN's efforts in continuing its reform, raising capabilities to tackle global threats and challenges, and better implementing responsibilities of the UN Charter. China backs developing countries to play a bigger role in the UN, Yang added. On the issue of climate change, Yang said it concerns sustainable development of all countries in the world and needs cooperation among all countries for its settlement. The Chinese government attaches great importance to the issue of climate change, he said, adding that China has taken a number of measures to tackle climate change and improve environment, and issued a national plan, the National Climate Change Program, to address the climate change issue. China welcomes the "roadmap" accord reached in Bali, Indonesia last December, and insists on tackling the climate change issue under the framework of sustainable development, Yang said. He reiterated China upholds the principle of "a common but differentiated responsibility" and insists on placing equal emphasis on both mitigation and adaptation, viewing the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change as the main channel to tackle the climate change issue and relying on technical innovation and transfer. Ban said the UN appreciates China's positive and constructive attribution as a permanent member of the Security Council in the international affairs. He said the UN would like to cooperate with China to properly solve major international and regional hot issues and promote world peace and common development. The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern such as Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, Middle East and African affairs. |
